Halloween 2003. Proud to say this was a last-minute costume.
Every Halloween, all the seniors in our high school were allowed to dress up. Being swamped with work and college applications at the time, we were all really busy, but I wanted to do something incredible. My best friend and I were lying on her couch, the day before Halloween, watching E.T. and moaning about how we'd never think of anything on time, when one of us joked "we should just go as E.T." Went back to the school, raided the art closet for paper maché, newspaper, acrylics, ran to the fabric store to grab some brown material, cut some holes in pantyhose for the arms... one all-nighter and several frustrated cries later, I had the costume. That's my friend wearing E.T. on the right, and I'm on the left as Elliot, toting Reese's Pieces and riding my little brother's bike with a basket duct-taped to the front. Be mindful of the Gypsy. They are quite stealy.
